Datebook Veteran's Day Ceremony at JCHS The Jenkins County High School (JCHS) Interact Club will sponsor a Veteran's Day Ceremony Friday, Nov. 9. The program will begin at 1:15 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. The purpose of the ceremony is to honor veterans from Millen and Jenkins County. There will be music and a color guard to open the program. A member of the JCHS Interact Club will give a brief history of Veteran's Day. The most important part of the program will be the introduction of the veterans in attendance. If you are a veteran, or if you know a veteran who would like to attend, please call Joyce Lanier at 982-4791 to have your space reserved. In order to have your name included in the program, please call by 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7. For more information, call Ray Miller at 982-4791 Cross Country Race; Veterans to be honored The 11th Annual Cross Country 4.8-mile Race will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Magnolia Springs State Park. Presented by Millen Milers and More, this event will be the USA Track and Field (USATF) Georgia Association Cross Country Championship. Members of USATF will receive open and age-group medals. Also, all runners will be eligible for agegroup awards from 10-and-under, 11-14, and five-year agegroups from 15-19, to 85 and over. There will also be a one mile fun run for youngsters, with age-group medals presented to 8- and-under, and in two-year age groups through 17-18. Prior to the presentation of awards, there will be a ceremony honoring Jenkins County veterans. All local and area veterans are invited. Look in next week's The Millen News for complete details. Judgment House 2007 West Millen Baptist Church will present Judgment House 2007, "Plenty of Time," 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, through Friday, Nov. 2, at the Jenkins County Recreation Department. Admission is free. Reservations are not required, but are appreciated. For more information, or to make reservations, call 982-5167. SCV recruiting/ retention meeting The SCV camps of Millen and Sylvania will host a recruiting/ retention meeting 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Olde Freight Depot Pavilion on Cotton Avenue. Field representative Jack Marlar will facilitate the meeting. Bring a coat, a chair and a friend; all interested persons are invited to attend. The meeting should last about an hour. Daughtry Reunion The descendents of John, Josh and Charlie Daughtry will hold their annual family reunion Sunday, Oct. 28, in the fellowship hall of Rocky Ford Baptist Church. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Family members are asked to bring a basket lunch and tea. Millen United Methodist Church Yard Sale Millen United Methodist Church will hold a church-wide yard sale 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, Nov. 3. The public is invited to come and check out the treasures and finds. Road Closures The Georgia Department of Transportation announces that from Monday, Oct. 29, through Thursday, Nov. 1, State Route 17 in Scarboro will be closed for railroad crossing maintenance, weather permitting. An official detour route will be posted. Traffic will be detoured on State Route 67, State Route 21 and State Route 73 during this closure. Hunter Education Course The Georgia Department of Natural Resources will offer a test and review for hunters taking the Hunter Education Internet course. The review and test will be given 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Magnolia Springs State Park. Those interested in the new Internet course should go to www.beasafehunter.org. After completing all lessons and the review test, students should print the "Hunter Education Final Report and Affidavit," sign it, and bring it with them to the class. Participants taking the test for the Internet Hunter Education course must pre-register. Participants can register at no cost by going to www.georgiawildlife.com and click on the course registration icon. You may also call 1(800) 864-7275 and to register for the Hunter Education course for a small fee. Upward Basketball and Cheerleading Would you child like equal playing time? Upward basketball and cheerleading is a league that will be run by Oak Hill Baptist Church, where every child plays, learns and becomes a winner. When your child plays upward basketball or cheerleading, he or she will be able to practice and play a game every week; learn techniques to improve his or her basketball or cheerleading skills; receive special awards after every game; and develop new friendships. The early registration cost is $25 per child, by Wednesday, Oct. 31. After this date, add $10. The deadline to register is Friday, Nov. 9. Those participating in the basketball program will receive a T-shirt, a jersey a car magnet and an end-of-the-season award. Those participating in cheerleading will receive a uniform, megaphones, pompoms, car magnet and an end-of-the-season award. Family Fall Festival Eastern Heights Baptist Church, Statesboro, will hold a Family Fall Festival 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.
