JCMS begins Readathon Jenkins County Middle School (JCMS) students began their "Race into Reading" Readathon using the Accelerated Reader program Monday, Oct. 22, and will conclude on Friday, Nov. 2. Students will be asking family members, friends and community members for pledges to support students' reading per Accelerated Reader point earned, per book read or a fixed donation. During the two weeks, students will read in reading class each day, any other free time and at home each day, as they do every day, and test on completed books. At the end of the Readathon, teachers will print out reports detailing points earned and books read during the two weeks. Students will then collect their pledges! Prizes will be awarded to students who raise the most money through their pledges. The purpose of this school fund-raiser is to raise money for incentives for students who reach their reading goals in reading classes, who show progress in their reading skill and level, and who become members of the various point and certification clubs. By motivating students to read through incentives and competition, school personnel hope to instill a love of reading that will enrich the students' lives. Many studies have concluded that the more students read, the better they read. As they read more and more, they begin to discuss books with other students, and they start to think about the deeper meaning of what they read. Increased comprehension and fluency naturally follow. Find a middle school student and pledge to support our reading program. |
