City, county, BOE to hold public hearings Citizens who have never attended a meeting of local governments will have ample opportunity to do so during the next week. The Jenkins County Commissioners, Jenkins County Board of Education and City of Millen have all scheduled public hearings and meetings. The difficulty may be deciding which ones to attend, as several will overlap each other. The Jenkins County Commissioners have scheduled public hearings on the county's millage rate proposal for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31 and 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. A called meeting will also be held 8 p.m. Nov. 8 to set the millage rate. The county is proposing a roll back of its millage rate. The Jenkins County Board of Education (BOE) has public hearings on its millage rate proposal scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, and 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. Doug Ezell, state-funding specialist, will speak at these hearings. A called meeting is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Nov. 8 to set the millage rate for the BOE. The BOE is proposing to maintain its present millage rate which could result in a tax increase for some property owners. The City of Millen will conduct a public hearing on its proposed millage rate 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. The city is anticipating no tax increase. A public hearing is also scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, for the purpose of discussing a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant the city recently received. Citizens interested in speaking during any of the public hearings or meetings should contact the governing body in order to be placed on the hearing/ meeting agenda. |
