Letters to the Editor Dear Editor: I just wanted to take a minute to say thanks to a group of folks that often go unrecognized and unappreciated. That would be the men and women of Planters EMC. When storms hit, Planters' linemen are there to get things up and running, regardless. When our volunteer firemen respond to fires, Planters' emergency responders are there to disconnect the power, to make things safer. When the community needs help, Planters is there. Whether it's volunteering in the Relay for Life by barbequing chicken dinners or administering the Operation Round-up Program, Planters is front and center. Not only are these folks a cornerstone of our community, they are a blessing to us all. Thanks. Thanks for everything you do. Mike Lane Dear Editor: Millen - a ghost town! This has been a fine week for Halloween, I tell you. Millen is slowly but surely turning into a ghost town. I was not born, nor was I raised, in Jenkins County. I am originally from Jefferson County. Nonetheless, my husband is from Millen, and so now this is my home. Anyhow, I hate for my kids to grow up and move from Millen because of the lack of job opportunities here. It seems that all the big industries keep dropping like flies. What is going on, people? Don't we have a development authority for something other than a train-viewing platform? I won't step on anyone's toes, but Millen's main power egos already have their nest eggs built, so they don't worry about the middle and lower class citizens of our community. Furthermore, they won't allow industry to come to our town. Something has got to give here soon, people, or we will have to travel to another town to buy groceries. And, to all those power egos - let our town prosper so that we can be proud to say we are from Jenkins County, instead of saying we made the news again, for another industry closing its doors. Without industry, we will become nothing more than just a ghost town depicting an old country western movie.
