City holds hearing on $500,000 grant
By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

The City of Millen held a public hearing Thursday, Nov. 1, for the purpose of discussing a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant recently received.

The grant will be used to make sewer system improvements in portions of Masonic Street, Edenfield Avenue, Ross Avenue, Mays Circle, Hart Avenue, Kingsridge Drive and Kingston Court. The proposed improvements consist of rehabilitation of the existing gravity sewer mains, replacement of all service laterals and replacement of all manholes.

The project will serve portions of the Millen Housing Authority, Briar Creek Apartments and the apartments formerly known as the Millen Villas. Approximately 152 households with 299 persons will be affected.

The city is required to fund $10,000 in engineering cost and $5,000 for acquisition of rightsof way or construction. Prior to receiving the grant, the city expended $5,459 to videotape the sewer mains in the target area.

Construction is expected to begin September 2008.
