Cross country run slated for Nov. 10 Millen wins over London! This is just one of the highlights of the 11th Annual Cross Country 4.8-mile run scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10, at Magnolia Springs State Park. Dr. Dave Martin, regents professor emeritus at Georgia State University's College of Allied Health Sciences and director the Elite Athlete Performance Lab, says he enjoys coming Millen and Magnolia Springs, and has the second Saturday November set aside in his personal calendar. Because of his work with elite runners from throughout the world for over 40 years, Dr. Martin is an authority on running and training, and in great demand as a speaker - which brings up Millen vs. London. He had just returned from his third trip to Beijing, China when he was contacted by a British athletics organization asking him to present a program in London the weekend of Saturday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 11. Dr. Martin replied that they would have to change the date because he was going to Millen, Ga. They did. Martin, author of over 100 articles and several acclaimed books, received the USA Track and Field's highest honor, the Giegengack Award, at the USATF convention last December. He is responsible for the training regimen of perennial women's, and sometime overall, winner as well as women's course record holder of the Cross Country 4.8, Donna Garcia. Garcia, 36, has competed as a member of U.S. cross-country teams in events around the world, and considers the course at Magnolia Springs the best of all the courses she has run. Local and area runners will join those from throughout Georgia and South Carolina. The event will also offer a onemile fun run for youngsters. Since this is Veteran's Day weekend, all Jenkins County veterans and active military are invited for special ceremonies after the race and prior to the awards presentation. The cross-country race will begin at 9 a.m. There will also be a mile fun run for those 18- and-under. Awards will be in five-year age groups in the longer race; medals in the mile in twoyear age groups. Entry forms have been available at Jenkins County schools, but race day registration is available at no increase in price. All participants receive a T-shirt. Food and drinks will be available afterwards. |
