Local man featured in U.S. Navy news magazine

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS RODERICK CAMPBELL
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Roderick Campbell, a Jenkins County native, was featured in the June 22 edition of the U.S. Navy's "The Wire" news magazine, published by the Joint Task Force, Guantanamo Bay. Campbell currently serves as a transfer clerk and personnel representative with the Navy Expeditionary Guard Battalion in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The "15 Minutes of Fame" column outlined Campbell's career with the Navy, noting that he has visited some of the most beautiful parts of Europe as a crewmember aboard the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy, U.S.S. Dwight Eisenhower and U.S.S. George Washington. He has enjoyed port visits to Rome and Naples, in Italy, Souda Bay, Greece, and Australia and Japan are on his list for future visits or duty stations.

"I just wanted a chance to do something different, so I joined the Navy," said Campbell.

He cites the opportunity to work with the other services while stationed in Guantanamo as a professional high point, stating that he has learned a lot about the other services and their operations.

Another high point for Campbell has been the opportunity for advancement. He was recently promoted to the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class, a feat achieved by only 30 other sailors in his advancement cycle.

To prepare for the exam, Campbell said he was provided an hour per day during working hours to study. It paid off for him.

Campbell credits much of his success to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Campbell Sr. of Millen, and the example they set for him, stating that their work ethic made him strive to work that much harder.
