National Flu Vaccination Week begins Nov. 27 In recognition of National Influenza Vaccination Week, which begins Monday, Nov. 26 and ends Sunday, Dec. 2, the East Central Health District is encouraging residents within the district to get vaccinated against seasonal flu. Typically, flu season starts around October- peaks in January and ends mid- March. Recognition of National Influenza Vaccination Week is designed to highlight the importance of continuing influenza (flu) vaccination, as well as fostering greater use of flu vaccine through the months of November, December and beyond. Melba McNorrill, immunization coordinator for the East Central Health District states, "Though the ECHD set aside a specific time period for residents to get their flu shots, district health departments will provide flu shots, based upon availability during this flu season." She further explains, "Residents should contact their local health department, primary care-provider and pharmacist for information on getting a flu shot." Additionally, this year, Tuesday, Nov. 27, is set aside as Children's Flu Vaccination Day, with a focus of vaccinating highrisk children. Each year, over 20,000 children are hospitalized as a result of influenza. This day will help raise awareness about the value of vaccinating childrenespecially high-risk children-and their close contacts. |
