An escapee from the Jenkins County Jail on Thursday, Dec. 6, found his freedom shortlived when he was recaptured later that night in Effingham County. Jenkins County Sheriff Tim Fields said that Don Galbreath, 42, of Uvalda, was hanging out laundry at the jail when he slipped away from the facility.
A Canine Unit from Reidsville State Prison was called in to track Galbreath, but the escapee was able to catch a ride to Statesboro and then to Toombs and Effingham counties. Galbreath was eventually taken into custody by Sheriff Fields, assisted by the Effingham County Sheriff 's Department, at a residence in Effingham County.
"Everyone who assisted him did not know that he had escaped. He told them that he had made bond and just needed a ride," Sheriff Fields said.
Galbreath was incarcerated in the Jenkins County Jail on charges stemming from the Oct. 29 armed robbery of McTeer Food and Fuel on U.S. Highway 25 South in Millen.
Sheriff Fields said Galbreath will be charged with "escape" and also has charges pending in Chatham County where he will be transferred at a later date.
