Community raises money for local youth in need of kidney transplant
A turkey shoot fund-raiser will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, for Brandon A. Smith, a 12-year-old Hiltonia resident who needs a kidney transplant in the near future.
The location of the event is Beaver Dam Sporting Clays (Frank Bruno's) in Hiltonia, across from the mulch plant on Highway 24. Qualifying shoot- ers will receive turkeys and additional prizes.
Brandon, a Screven County Middle School student with family throughout Burke and Screven counties, was diagnosed in October 2004 with Chronic Renal Insufficiency (CRI,) commonly referred to as kidney disease.
According to Brandon's parents, Bo and Becky Smith, doctors are allowing his body to adjust for an eventual transplant, but planning financial aspects of his care and future medical expenses cannot wait.
Proceeds from the event and any donations will be deposited into an account at Bank of Newington in Sylvania, with any excess funds donated to the National Kidney Association.
Brandon is the grandson of Horris and Sheron Allen of Sardis, Mytle Kemp of Sylvania, and William and Sadie Smith of Hiltonia.
