Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Thursday, April 24, the chamber will have their annual banquet. We are very fortunate to have one of our very own Jenkins County natives for their guest speaker. One of the kindest, nicest and intelligent persons you would want to know, Nancy Cobb.

I knew Nancy's mother, Inez Sapp Clayton, deceased, and her father is J. W. Clayton. I can remember seeing Inez and her three little girls together. One of those little girls is now a young lady, Kathy Clifton, married to Dudley, and she works at Georgia Southern. Another is Jeanne Poenicke of Savannah. She works in the finance department of Georgia Ports Authority. That is what I know about two of those precious little girls.

What I know about the third little girl, Nancy, is that she is married to Bob Cobb who graduated from veterinarian school and moved to Millen. After some time, he took Nancy from us to Dublin. Nancy's career in Millen was Finance Officer for the City of Millen for about nine years. She stated that Bo Ginn was the Congressman and Robert Fries was the Mayor. That was when the new city hall was built, while she was there. She has lots of fond memories of Millen and is always an ambassador for her hometown.

She has really moved on to a bigger and better position in our state; however, it has not affected her personality one bit. She is the Executive Director of OneGeorgia Authority. The first time I met Nancy, after she moved away, was in 2003 when I was sworn in by the Governor to the Georgia Rural Development Council. She came to me and introduced herself and took me under her wings and introduced me to many folks at the meeting. She has always told everyone she encounters, that her hometown is Millen. That is one fact that she remains proud to proclaim. She has helped Jenkins County and Millen tremendously. We have received from the OneGeorgia Authority over $700,000 in grant money.

Today, I heard that Nancy was awarded, just last Friday night, from Georgia College and State University, her alma mater, the 2008 Alumni Achievement Award. I am not the only one who knows that she is deserving!

I just wanted to toot my horn for Nancy Cobb! I do hope that the folks of Millen and Jenkins County will buy a ticket and patronize the chamber banquet and show Nancy we appreciate her by having a large audience for her program. So, go out and buy your ticket today, I ask you!

Mabel Jenkins
