The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

I have been informed that some confusion is occurring among our citizens as they attempt to vote absentee ballots for the July 15 Democratic/Republican General Primary Election.

Voters should be aware that all candidates for Jenkins County Sheriff and Jenkins County Board of Commission seats are running on the Democratic ballot. If you desire to vote in these local elections, you must request a Democratic ballot.

You cannot vote a "split" ticket in this election. However, voters may vote a "split" ticket in the November General Election.

Please understand that I am not encouraging you to vote Democratic, only explaining that all local candidates are running as Democrats.

Sample ballots appear on page 3.

We added a new feature to our website last week, a poll question. Last week's question was, "An effort is underway by the VFW to raise funds for a war memorial. Do the citizens of Jenkins County want a war memorial?"

The responses were as follows: Yes-29; No-7; and No feelings- 3. Be sure to check out this week's question and cast your votes.

The website address is: http://themillennews.com.

If you have crossed the railroad tracks on Cotton Avenue lately, you are aware of the much smoother ride. Crews of Norfolk Southern Railroad worked on the tracks during the scorching heat and are deserving of a "thank you" for their efforts in taking the "bounce" out of the ride across.

A recent announcement by the county that they have contracted with the Department of Transportation to stripe many county roads is welcomed news. Those of us who have to travel country roads at night are aware of how dangerous that can be. Striping the roads will certainly help motorists navigate them more safely.

Happy birthday this week to: Brittany Morris, Josh Fleming, Mary Troisi, DeDe Motes, Elaine Williams Jasper McKinzie, Rudine Becton, David Brown, Matt Bazemore, Megan Bazemore and Ronnie Fleming.

Celebrating wedding anniversaries are: Mr. and Mrs. Josh Fleming and Mr. and Mrs. Fab Black.
