City adopts outdoor watering ordinance
Violation of outdoor water restrictions in the City of Millen will have second time offenders digging deeper into their pockets. Millen City Council adopted an Outdoor Watering Ordinance during its Tuesday, Aug. 5, meeting that requires the discontinuation of water service for second time offenders and a $200 fine that must be paid to restore service. The action was taken in order to comply with state regulations governing outdoor watering in the salt water intrusion area of the state.
Under provisions of the ordinance, first time offenders will receive a warning citation from the Millen Police Department.
The ordinance follows an even/odd schedule for outdoor watering. Odd number addresses may water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from midnight until 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to midnight. Even number addresses may water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from midnight until 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to midnight. Outdoor watering at the Millen Cemetery may be done on Fridays from midnight until 10 a.m. only.
City residents who have private wells are asked to voluntarily comply with the schedule.
Other actions taken by council included the following:
• Authorized city administrator to proceed with plans and secure funding to replace three fire hydrants in connection with the Community Development Block Grant project on South Masonic Street;
• Authorized city administrator to develop a plan to finance tap fee charges for residents of the GEFA project in Askins Acres;
• Approved the expenditure of $1,000 for insurance coverage associated with the U.S. Hwy. 25 water/sewer project; and
• Approved the permanent change of meeting time for council meetings to 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.
