Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

When I first heard the news about the state and local tax hikes, I was angry and looked for someone or something to blame. After some reflection and meditation, I realized that this development holds no ground for blame. It is actually the beginning of a great revival in America and throughout the world.

To be revived means: to come or bring back to a healthy, vigorous or flourishing condition after a decline.

I believe that our suffering is meant to revivify us. I believe that there are supernatural forces at work and that the purpose is to subjugate the evil forces that have ridden roughshod over us for nearly a decade. The wicked believe that they have prevailed and rejoice in their evil, but there are greater forces at work.

It is time for us to be revived. Our suffering has made us stronger and wiser. We have not been forsaken! We must insist that the Ten Commandments not only be displayed but also be enforced equally to all, inconsequential of their political party affiliation, wealth or social standing.

I urge everyone to contact our government representatives and demand that Usury Laws be reinstated and strictly enforced. Also, demand that the tax burden be shifted back to those who obtained obscene wealth by draining the lifeblood from the poor. To be helped, we must be willing to help ourselves.

Dear Editor,

The Patriotic Celebration on Saturday night, July 5, was a great event. Though rain threatened, the Millen/Jenkins County community came out in record numbers to visit, eat, listen to the music and see the spectacular fireworks show.

So many local citizens made this event possible. Clay Boulineau and his staff set up the stage, cut the grass and took care of numerous other details; Wade Parker and the Lion's Club provided the flags for decoration; and Horace Weathersby and the Jenkins County Recreation Department permitted us to use the facilities.

Our local elected officials contributed to the program: Mayor King Rocker, County Commission Chairman Jerry Henry and Commissioner Pam Dwight. Other local citizens were generous with their time and talent: Hank Whiters was outstanding singing the Star Spangled Banner; Col. Wade and JROTC presented the colors; and Leroy Clayton, Jessica Herrmann and Will Gay performed patriotic music. Joe Sasser provided the sound system and served as DJ and master of ceremonies for the evening.

The fireworks are always the big attraction. The financial contributors who made the show possible are: Millen Loan and Finance, Thompson's Corner, Round's Fishing Hole, Papa's Pizza, Planters EMC, James L. Alfriend, Foresters, Parker Engineering, Jenkins County Farm Bureau, The Dairy Queen, Linder Pharmacy, John C. Wilson, Co., One Body Fitness Center, The Millen News, Plantation Properties, W. R. Toole Engineers, Inc., Georgia Power, Neal Hardware, The Charm Barn, Bob and Donna Boone, Ronald and Vivian Jenkins, Christy Bandy, Millen City Council and the Jenkins County Commissioners.

The support and cooperation from everyone was outstanding.
