JCMS recognized for exemplary writing
Jenkins County Middle School received the 2008 Writing to Win Exemplary School of Writing award. An Exemplary School of Writing luncheon in honor of those schools receiving recognition was held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Macon Sept. 9. Mr. Nick Larché, a representative from the office of Georgia's Commissioner of the Department of Labor, welcomed the educators to Macon and challenged them to keep up their rigorous work for the sake of the Georgia adult workforce. Georgia author, Dr. Philip Lee Williams of Watkinsville, shared his writing and spoke on the passion and gifts of Georgia school children. He signed copies of his latest books.
Writing to Win positions standards for administrators and teachers to reach in journal writing, process writing and language skills that are correlated to the state and national standards for writing. JCMS emerged as a qualifying school from over 140 Writing to Win schools throughout Georgia and South Carolina. More than 80% of the trained faculty met the high Writing to Win standards in one or more of these phases of writing: frequent journal entries about what they are learning across the curriculum; process-writing projects in which students start multiple first drafts before completing one in at least four genre of writing; and language skills taught in the context of writing.
The principal of JCMS is Nichole Moulton. Susan Purvis, graduation coach, and Dinah Cobb, eighth grade reading teacher, also attended the luncheon.
