County submits projects for State Aid Grant
Determining which projects to place on a State Aid Grant application was not an easy task for the Jenkins County Commissioners when they met Tuesday, Nov. 4.
It was noted that eight projects were allowed on the application with the maximum award amount being $750,000. It was also noted that there were no guarantees that the county would receive the grant or of the amount that would be awarded should the grant be approved.
After discussion of the matter, the commissioners approved the following projects for the grant application: paving of 1.1 miles on Grapevine Road; improvements at the intersections of Hwy. 23 North and Hiltonia Road and Rosemary Church Road and West Old Savannah Road; rehabilita- tion/patching of 6.5 miles on Perkins Greenfork Road; and bridge and culvert improvements on Grapevine Road and Paramore Hill Road.
In other matters, Chairman James Henry updated the group on the progress being made on installation of a new E-911 system.
"It is crunch time with the E- 911," commented Chairman Henry as he inquired as to how the group would like to deal with financing the equipment.
Payment to AT&T in the amount of $157,497.60 was approved with funding to come from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax revenue. The account will be reimbursed as E-911 revenue becomes available.
It was also suggested that local citizens check their cellular phone bills to make sure that the E-911 surcharge was designated to be received by Jenkins County. Otherwise, the county where the phone was purchased may be receiving the revenue. Citizens can notify their cellular phone company if a change needs to be made.
The third reading of the proposed Timber Operation Ordinance was held after which the document was adopted by a vote of 3-1 with Commissioner Floyd Chance casting the opposing vote. Commissioners Tommy Lane, Domingo Green and Chairman Henry voted in favor. Commissioner Pam Dwight was absent.
