Bulloch Academy grads named AP Scholars

Ten Bulloch Academy (BA) graduates earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college level Advanced Placement (AP) program exams.

Drew Cheshire, Whitney Hinson, Rob Mallard, Will Powell, Chloe Radford, Michael Sapp, Rachel Smith, Jordan Walker, Chelsea Williams and Betsy Woodrum took AP exams in May 2008 after completing Advanced Placement courses at Bulloch Academy. The College Board's Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school and to receive college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP exams.

Only approximately 18 percent of the 1.6 million high-school students worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to earn an AP Scholar Award.

Four students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor award. Mallard, Radford, Williams and Woodrum earned an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of the exams.

Six students qualified for the AP Scholar Award. Cheshire, Hinson, Powell, Sapp, Smith and Walker completed three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher.

Currently, Bulloch Academy offers five AP courses for juniors and seniors: U.S. History, Government, English Literature, English Language and Art History. Plans are in the works to expand the school's AP program.

Most of the nation's universities and colleges award credit, advanced placement or both based on successful performance on the AP exams.

Woodrum, the valedictorian of the 32-member class, is a freshman at the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens and was awarded a Governor's Scholarship. Hinson, Williams and Powell are also freshmen at UGA. Hinson was BA's co-salutatorian, is in the UGA Honors' Program and is a recipient of a UGA Charter scholarship. Williams was awarded a National Beta Club scholarship.

Cheshire, Sapp and Walker are freshmen at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. All three are in the Honors' Program. Cheshire won a Housing Scholarship, while Sapp and Walker were awarded 1906 Society scholarships.

Mallard, the 2008 Bulloch County STAR Student and the school's co-salutatorian, is a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Radford is a freshman at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. and was awarded four PC scholarships. Smith, BA's 2008 DAR Good Citizen, is a freshman at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.
