Syl-View Happenings

We were thrilled to have Gloria Parker and Starr Mills of the DAR to host our Veteran's Day celebration at Syl-View. Mrs. Parker, dressed in red, white and blue, gave the devotional. Those being honored were seated at a table draped with red; and arrangements of candles in red, white and blue, cascading gold stars and a red rose placed on the Holy Bible formed the interest center.

Charlie Massey told of his army experience, as he was introduced. He received a purple heart, as he was wounded in combat. Cecil Pye joined in the fun, as we talked with each one about their service for our country. John Smith stated that he was a cook, and Don Baxter worked in the radar area. William Brinson shared some of his army experiences, and told of being on a ship for 21 days as he was transported to Iceland.

William Reversz told of his days in the army. Charity Bragg told how she and her husband helped build ships for the armed forces to use.

Thomas Norman shared some of his experiences, as he served his country. Ward Lee, Sonny Dickey and Ernest Brigdon did not attend the celebration, but all veterans were presented with a gift bag from the DAR. Two on our staff who are veterans, Jimmy Hall and Tamissha Major, received gift bags. Following the singing of "God Bless America," Toni Ellison, administrator, led in prayer of thanksgiving and dedication.

I was interested in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry Among Executive and Professional Women, as we were able to view so many of the Syl-View Happenings through the years. Some dated back to the year 2002, when Mrs. Ellison and I took part in a Career Fair at Swainsboro Technical College. We were able to recall many events and related articles.

I rejoiced to see a mention of the 2007 National Volunteer Group Award received by the "Bingo Angels" of Syl- View. There was coverage of my being named "Activity Director of the Year" for the state of Georgia in 1995. The presentation was as current as my being a part of the training program for new activity directors, with this taking part last week. It really spotlighted The Millen News articles and pictures used in the "Syl- View Happenings" through the years. So, thank you, The Millen News, for this opportunity to have the column.

There was a memorial featuring Dr. Donald E. Billings, a professor in astro-geophysics at the University of Colorado, who lived at Syl-View at the time of his death. We are so blessed by the residents who make their home at Syl- View.

The Georgia Bulldog fans watched the Kentucky-Georgia football game after enjoying a tailgate party recently, with music provided by Glen Walden.

We wish for you a wonderful holiday season of love, peace and joy. Please visit us soon.
