Millen Better Hometown awarded $2,000 GAP grant
Millen Better Hometown was recently awarded a $2,000 Grassroots Arts Program (GAP) grant for its Community Arts for Children and Adults project. Art Johnson is grant coordinator and will assist Kenton Jenkins, president of the Ogeechee River Artists Association (ORAA), in overseeing the project.
GAP funds are from the state legislature and are administered throughout the state by the Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA) through network partners. The GCA network partner for Jenkins County is the Statesboro Arts Council. Tony Phillips is the contact person.
The GAP funds awarded Jenkins County will be used to provide meaningful art experiences for the citizens of Jenkins County, for all ages, both in creation and in viewing. "Community Arts for Children and Adults" has two thrusts, children ages 4-12 and adults beginning at age 13.
The children's program will include after school art classes from January through April taught primarily by volunteers from the ORAA. Instruction will be in pottery, glass art, fabric collages, paper collages, painting, drawing, pastels, journaling/scrapbooking, color theory and drama. An art show open to the public will be scheduled in early May.
The adult program will provide art instruction to any interested adults. Beginning in November, classes will be offered in drawing, pottery, watercolor and oil portraits.
