Chambliss gets local win in runoff

Approximately 1,698 of Jenkins County’s 4,929 registered voters went to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in the General Election Run-off. This represents 34.45 percent turnout.

In the race for U.S. Senator, Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss was the local winner polling 968 votes as compared to 717 for Democrat Jim Martin.

Republican Lauren W. McDonald Jr. was the successful candidate locally in the race for Public Service Commissioner, to succeed Angela Elizabeth Speir, receiving 815 votes. Democratic opponent Jim Powell received 728 votes.

For Judge, Court of Appeals of Georgia, to succeed John R. Ruffin, Jenkins County voters chose Mike Sheffield over Sara Doyle by a vote of 656 to 618.
