MLK parade to be held January 21 The annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21 in downtown Millen. This year's theme is "Many Faces, One Community." Check-in will start at 8:30 a.m. at the West Winthrope Avenue intersection with Cotton Avenue. All entries must be in place by 9:45 a.m. The line-up sheet will be forwarded to the judges in order to give them ample time to judge with precision and accuracy. The line-up site will be West Cotton Avenue, the short street past Jarrard Chevrolet that runs adjacent with the railroad tracks. If more space is needed, entrants may cross over Winthrope Avenue to Wilson Avenue. The area at the old water tank on Cotton Avenue will be reserved for bands. Startup time is 10 a.m. Awards will be given for first, second and third place entrants for floats, cars, walking entries and trucks and novelties. SUVs and vans will be considered a truck. Each entrant can earn a total of 100 points, divided into two categories: 1-50 for entry and 1-50 for theme. The higher the score, the better, with two being the lowest and 100 being the highest possible score. Judging will be determined based upon the following: "Entry" (using the 1-50 score) - 1. How presentable is the entry? 2. How well is it holding up? (No including the weather) and 3. Is the size adequate? "Theme"- 1. Is any part of the theme mentioned? 2. Is any part of the theme displayed?
Drivers should remember to allow enough space between entries that judges will have sufficient time to make adequate decisions. |
