Planters EMC to sponsor youth tour Planters Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) invites local students to apply for the 2008 Washington Youth Tour. The electric cooperative will be selecting three high school juniors for an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. where they will join dozen of other students from around the state and around the country in the nation's capital June 12-19 to see how America works. Before departing for D.C., students will spend a day in Georgia getting to know each other, learning about Georgia's 42 EMCs and the electric cooperative industry and enjoying a private tour of the birthplace of rural electrification, the Little Whitehouse in Warm Springs. Washington highlights will include cruising down the Potomac River and laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery, as well as touring the U.S. Supreme Court, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, Mount Vernon, the National Cathedral and Ford's Theatre. The group will visit memorials honoring presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington and veterans of World War II, the Vietnam War and the Korean War. They will also watch the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and the Silent Drill Platoon perform at the Iwo Jima Memorial. Museums to be explored include the Smithsonian Institute and the Holocaust Museum. The deadline for 2008 applications is Friday, Feb. 8. Those interested should contact Randy Hill at Planters EMC at (478) 982-4722, extension 246. |
