Gay, Campbell re-elected BOE chairman, vice-chairman The first order of business at the Monday, Jan. 7, meeting of the Jenkins County Board of Education (BOE) was to appoint a chairman and vice-chairman of the group. Carroll Gay was reappointed chairman, and Roderick Campbell was reappointed vice-chairman. Also reappointed for another year of service was school board attorney Van Pool of Statesboro. Jenkins County School Superintendent Joan Blackwood re- ported that the school system had been able to pay off its line of credit before the end of calendar year 2007, as required by law. The BOE approved a resolution to establish a new line of credit at Regions Bank, if needed in the future. A previously scheduled Open House for the Jenkins County High School new gymnasium was delayed pending inspection by the fire marshal and continuation of work on seating. A tentative February date was discussed with final approval to come later. BOE members discussed the possibility of installing metal detectors in the new gymnasium with Larry Adams being instructed to investigate the cost of the installation. Approval was given for the placement of an "Eagle" statue in the lobby of the gym in memory of former JCHS student and basketball player Bob Bedingfield by his family. Revision of the Use of Facilities Policy and Procedures was discussed and approved for 30- day review after which it will be officially approved. The dates of BOE meetings for the coming year were also approved for the third Monday night of each month with the exception of February, at which time the BOE will meet on the fourth Monday night, and January 2009 when the BOE will meet on the first Monday night. Following executive session (closed meeting) the BOE's policy regarding supplements was placed on the table for 30- day review. |
