MLK celebration plans announced

Plans have been finalized for the local celebration of Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Day.

Activities will begin 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, with the "Miss Dream Queen - Mr. Dream King" pageant at Morrison Grove Baptist Church. There is a $30 entrance fee. For information, contact Carolyn Lowe, 982-8092; Annie Mikel, 982-8092; or Mirian Johnson, 982-9993.

A MLK Prayer Breakfast will be held 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the First Baptist Church social hall. The speaker will be the Rev. Chavis Boyd, pastor, BarCamp Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Sardis and branch manager, Queensboro National Bank, Augusta. Tickets are $5. The Service of Rededication will be held 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Glean Andrews as speaker. He is principal of Glenn Hills Middle School, Augusta. The annual MLK Jr. parade will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in downtown Millen. This year's Grand Marshals will be Glenn Kelly Jr., a Jenkins County High School student and president of the Georgia Career Students Association, and Seretha Sherrod, Miss Teen Georgia. Following the parade, a program will be held at Bethel A.M.E. Church featuring the Rev. Jeremy Foreman, youth minister, Endtime Faith Church, as the speaker. Special guest will be Little Mister Isaiah Barker, star of Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married." Also, appearing will be recording artist, Minister Fred Prophet.
