MI announces lay-offs
Plant Manager: Temporary lay-offs due to slow business
By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

Jenkins County's workforce suffered another blow last week with the lay-off of 22 employees at the local MI Metals extrusion plant. Plant Manager Lonnie Beal said that the lay-off was temporary, due to a decline in business.

"It's not just us. Business is slow everywhere," he commented.

MI Windows and Doors began operations in Millen in 1990 with the purchase of the former Remington facility. Two additional plants were later added, MI Metals and Capitol Architectural Products.

The two window fabrication plants, MI Windows and Doors and Capital Architectural, closed in December 2007, resulting in the loss of approximately 200 jobs. MI Metals remained open with approximately 60 persons employed at the facility at the time. Last week's lay-off will leave only 31 employees at the plant.
