County plans to adopt roads into system
By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

County residents who travel Rock Branch, Skull Creek #1, Skull Creek #2 and New Testament Church roads may soon see improvements to the roads. The Jenkins County Commissioners approved a motion to include the roads in the county road system, provided all property owners are willing to sign a deed of dedication to the county. Doing so would legally allow the county to maintain the roads.

In making the decision, consideration was given to the fact that each road has a church located on it, and church members had previously requested that the county maintain the roads. It was also noted that the total mileage of all the roads was approximately one mile and that maintaining them would not involve a lot of work.

Approval was given to the purchase of an alcohol sensor for the county's probation office in the amount of $650, plus related shipping costs. Probation officer Judy Rocker commented that the state had previously funded purchase of the item, but no longer did so.

"The state government is balancing its budget on our backs…This is just one more thing they have stopped funding, and somebody has to do it," commented Chairman James Henry.

John Frankhouser requested a variance to the county's subdivision ordinance which requires that divided lots must be at least two acres. Mr. Frankhouser presented a plat proposing the division of a parcel of land on Ogeechee Road into three lots, one of which would be 1.7 acres.

The request was approved with the provision that the plat must note that appropriate permits

must be secured by the landowners prior to any construction taking place on the lots. A finalized plat will be presented for approval at a later date.

Several changes were approved to the county's personnel policy, one of which allows county employees to "bank" up to 45 days of earned personal leave. Possible additions to the policy concerning family leave, medical leave and military leave were discussed with no action taken.

A resolution was approved and signed by the commissioners to bring the local Emergency Management Agency into compliance with Georgia Emergency Management Agency regulations.

Several building maintenance requests by the Jenkins County Health Department was turned over the county field supervisor.
