Davis, Deal named STAR student, teacher

Jenkins County High School (JCHS) has a new set of "stars" in Dorothy (Dee Dee) Danielle Davis, 2007-2008 STAR student, and Nancy Deal, 2007-2008 STAR teacher.

To obtain STAR nomination, a student must have the highest score in one sitting on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) taken through the November test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students in their class.

Dee Dee, the daughter of Jimmy Davis and Regina Davis, selected Ms. Deal as her STAR teacher.

Dee Dee's academic accomplishments include: National Achievement Scholar recognition; Rochester University Bausch and Lomb Science Award recipient; Basketball Scholar Award; Highest GPA among ZPB Archonettes Award; JROTC Sergeant; local Rotary club speech contest winner; highest Spanish average, 10th and 11th grades; highest literature average, 9th and 10th grades; highest biology average, 10th grade; VOCA competition, 2nd place region, 1st place state in mathematical applications, 2007; VOCA competition, 2nd place region, 5th place state in communication skills, 2006; GCSA reporter; and a helper at the JCHS blood drive.

Her extracurricular activities include: softball, 3 years; basketball, 4 years; GCSA (formerly VOCA) 3 years; Zeta Phi Beta Archonette, 4 years; member of Williams Gove Missionary Baptist Church and frequent visitor to West Millen Baptist Church; and Educational Talent Search member.

Dee Dee plans to attend Valdosta State upon graduation from high school and major in Accounting with a minor in Finance.

On her selection of Deal as her STAR teacher, Dee Dee said, "She is a wonderful biology teacher. When I was in her class, she was not just a teacher. She helped us with real life situations. That is why I chose her as my STAR teacher."

Ms. Deal, a Bulloch County native and a graduate of Statesboro High School, is a 22-year veteran of the education profession, having taught 21 years in the Jenkins County school system. She has also served as a Support Director for Teach for America's Summer Institute where she supervised the teacher training of 18 college students within the Los Angeles public school system as they trained to become Teach for America Corps members.

She holds a bachelor of science with a major in Biology, master of education and education specialist in Science Education degrees from Georgia Southern University. Her recognitions include: JCHS Teacher of the Year, 1997, and Jenkins County Teacher of the Year, 1997. She was awarded the Georgia Academy of Science Outstanding Graduate Research Paper award for her graduate research into horseflies, having the research published in the Georgia Journal of Science and the International Organization for Mycoplasmology Letters. Ms. Deal has also done research on the relationship between gender and achievement on the high school science graduation test published in the Georgia Southern University Educational Forum.

In commenting on Dee Dee's achievements, Ms. Deal said, "I am so proud of Dee Dee for earning STAR student and JCHS. She is so very worthy of this honor. I've learned a lot from Dee Dee, especially perseverance. She does not give up in the face of adversity; she sets her goals high and often exceeds them,"
