A Sign of the Times

During a recent meeting of the Jenkins County Commissioners, it was noted that the county is experiencing a "shortfall" in its collection of local property taxes. Considering that most property owners saw a significant increase in their taxes and that many of our citizens are unemployed due to recent plant closings, it should come as no surprise but rather a "sign of the times."

Our citizens are experiencing a reduction in their incomes, and this translates into a "shortfall" not only for the county, but also the city, local businesses, churches and even civic organizations. When money is short, people are forced to determine what can wait for payment and what they can do without. "Wants" are tossed out the window as "necessities" take precedence.

Jenkins County is facing the most serious crisis it has encountered in recent years. We remain hopeful that things will turn around and that jobs will soon be secured for our citizens who desire nothing more than to be able to work in their home community and support their families. In the meantime, however, the trickle effect is sure to continue and more "shortfalls" are certain to surface.

We believe that while most of our citizens want to pay their taxes, some simply do not have the funds to do so.
