Millen Garden Council presents Flower Show

Design Class 1, blue ribbon, Betty Black, Azalea Garden Club
The Millen Garden Council presented its 2008 Standard Flower Show 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the Jenkins County Agriculture Center.

The show, titled "A Step Back in Time in Jenkins County," featured 173 horticultural entries, 24 design entries, two educational exhibits and a youth entry.

The council is a member of the Oleander District, the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., the National Garden Club, Inc.

The five clubs that comprise the council are Azalea, Camellia, Green Thumb, Magnolia and Millen.

The show scored 95 and above, and was well attended by flower and gardening lovers from Millen and surrounding areas. The Millen Garden Council sponsors the local show every two years. All of the garden clubs participated in this year's show. General chairman was Doris Rabitsch, who was assisted by Jeanette Brantley. Both are members of Camellia Garden Club.

Oliver's General Store was presented an Award of Appreciation for their outdoor display of container gardening on Nana's Porch. At the entrance door was a hand drawn sign stating the show title, date, time and show place. The agriculture center was decorated with fern baskets, ivy baskets, a camellia arrangement and open cotton bolls. Wrought iron benches, chairs and tables were used with a teapot and cups. Pictures of each class' titles were used on the design tables.

The top awards in Division I, Horticulture were as follows. The NGC Award of Horticultural Excellence was presented to Bobbie Reid. The NGC Award of Merit in the Camellia Division also went to Reid. The NGC Award of Merit in the Narcissus Division went to Art Johnson. The NGC Award of Merit in Corms (other than narcissus) was presented to Jane Johnson.

Art Johnson also received the NGC Sweepstakes Award for winning the most blue ribbons in Horticulture.

Division II, designs, winners, their ribbons and clubs are as follows:

• Section A, Designer's Choice, was won by Rachael Johnson of the Millen club.

Design Class 3, blue ribbon, Jean Skinner, Azalea Garden Club
• Class I, "Cotton Avenue," winners are: blue, Betty Black, Azalea; red, Shelby Williams, Millen; yellow, Judy Taylor, Camellia; and white, Angie Cates, Magnolia.

• Class 2, "Magnolia Springs," winners are: blue, Marie Busby, Azalea; red, Lynn Hillis, Magnolia; yellow, Joy Bracewell, Green Thumb; and white, Wilma Gainey, Camellia.

• Class 3, "Hotel Estell," winners are: blue, Jean Skinner, Azalea; red, Veronica Cowart, Camellia; yellow, Martha Sue Wilson, Green Thumb; and white, Cindy Linder, Millen.

• Class 4, "The Nancy Hanks," winners are: blue and Designer's Choice, Rachael Johnson, Millen; red, Jan Williams, Magnolia; yellow, Annette Gay, Camellia; and white, Becky Becton, Green Thumb.

• Class 5, "Buckhead Church," winners are: blue, Mary Andrew, Magnolia; red, Virginia McBride, Azalea; yellow, Sharon Tillman, Millen; and white, Sara Jo Britt, Green Thumb.

• Class 6, "Millen Community House Victorian Luncheon," winners are: blue, Gilda Rackley, Magnolia; red, Jane Johnson, Azalea; yellow, Polly Cowart, Camellia; and white, Billie Newton, Millen.

Design Class 4, blue ribbon and Designer's Choice, Rachael Johnson, Millen Garden Club
• Division III, Special Exhibits, Section A, Youth, Class 2, "The Fall Fair Rides were Exciting," winner is: blue, Katelyne Sapp.

• Section B, Educational, winners are: Exhibit 1, Planting Perennials, blue and Educational Award, Jenkins County Memorial Library; and Exhibit 2, Propagating Shrubs, red, Jenkins County 4-H clubs.
