Eagles go 1-1 on diamond

The Jenkins County High School varsity Eagles baseball team was 1-1 last week, defeating Portal 9-7 and losing to Hephzibah 10-7.

Leading hitters in the Portal game were: Justin Lanier, 2-4 with 1 double,1 triple, and 2 RBI's; Justin Johnson and Spencer Clark, 1-2 with 2 RBI's each; Will Bragg, Zac Clark and Ethan Conway all went 1-2; and Houston Bowers went 1-1.

Will Bragg pitched 4 and 2/ 3 innings with three strikeouts, no walks and only five hits to get the win. Aaron Comstock pitched two good innings getting the save only allowing two hits with four strikeouts.

"We did not give up a single walk in seven innings. It was a great win for us to begin our first region game. I would like to thank the fans for all the cheering and excitement in the stands," said coach Wendell Clark.

In the Hephzibah game, leading hitters were: Caleb Chance went 2-3 and a RS; Justin Lanier, 2-4 with 1 double, 1 homerun that carried right center fence by at least 20 yards and 2 RBI's; Will Bragg, 1-1; and Houston Bowers with a monster of a homerun traveling about 400 feet.

"We wanted to get work from seven of our pitchers. Overall I was happy with the pitching. At times they did not get a lot of support from the defense. We wanted to get a good look at who needs to be pitching in our region games. I'm very proud of the team this year. We played hard all the way to the end of the game," commented Coach Clark.
