Datebook Jenkins County Second Annual Barbecue Cook-off The Jenkins County Second Annual Barbecue Cookoff will be held on Jenkins County Recreation Department's Opening Day, Saturday, April 5. Proceeds from the cookoff will benefit the Patriotic Fireworks Celebration to be held in July. The rules are as follows. All meat must be cooked the day of the cookoff. You may cook any type of pork, i.e. ribs, whole hog, hams, etc. No garnishes or sauces allowed on the meat; this includes onions, peppers, bacon and/or vegetables. Each team must cook on only one pit. The meat may be seasoned and/or marinated prior to cooking. Judging will begin promptly at 11 a.m. All samples must be on the judges' table at least five minutes prior to judging. First prize is $150; second prize is $100; and third prize is $50. There will be a special prize of $100 for the best sausage. Sausage can be any type of meat. Clean up your space. Plates will be sold. To participate, turn in the following information to Jenkins County Farm Bureau or the Jenkins County Chamber of Commerce office: team name; team captain; telephone and cell phone numbers; and E-mail address. GED Registration and Testing The GED examination will be given at Swainsboro Technical College Wednesday, April 2, and Thursday, April 3. Required registration will be held at 9 a.m. in building number 8, and at 6 p.m. in building number 1, room 1109, today, Wednesday, March 26. Picture identification and social security card must be presented, and the $95 test fee is due at registration. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. If applicants are 18 or 19 years of age, an official withdrawal from the last school attended must also be presented at registration.
