"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for our students," according to Debra Herrmann, Jenkins County School Nutrition Director.
It provides the nutrients and energy each child needs to concentrate in school. Research even shows that children who eat breakfast earn higher grades, pay more attention in class, and behave better. Parents should help their children begin their day on the right foot by encour- aging them to eat a nutritional breakfast.
The Jenkins County School Nutrition Program offers a nutritional breakfast each morning to all students at no cost to them. The school cafeterias start feeding students at 7:40 a.m. and ends when the bell rings for school to begin. Provisions are made for late buses or sick students to eat after the bell rings.
In order to bring awareness of the importance of breakfast and to gain support for the role that the school food service program plays in the lives of schoolchildren, Jenkins County School Food Service (SFS) celebrated National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) March 3-7. Their theme this year for NSBW was "Fuel Your Imagination." Nearly 300 parents of elementary students joined SFS in the celebration by eating breakfast with their child (ren) on Thursday and Friday. Debra Herrmann and the school food service staff appreciated the parents who participated in the National School Breakfast Celebration week, as well as Dr. Judy Holton and her staff.
