Work has been underway for several weeks on the last section of the Savannah River Parkway (SRP) that transverses Jenkins County with completion of the project slated for June 2010. Right-of-way clearance has begun in many areas along the route, including the section that travels through the City of Millen.

This project runs from the intersection of U.S. Highway 25 South and State Route 121 (Woodpecker Trail) north to the Millen Bypass. The total distance of the project is 11.53 miles with the replacement of the bridges over the Central of Georgia Railroad and Little Buckhead Creek included in the plans. The plans also call for the construction of two additional 12- foot lanes to run parallel to the existing lanes and a median between the north and south lanes.

Construction is continuing on the leg of the SRP that runs from Paynes Chapel Road to the intersection of U.S. Highway 25, and the 9.2 mile section of the project running north from the Millen Bypass to CR 118 in Burke County has been completed.

When completed, the 156-mile 4-lane roadway will connect Augusta and Savannah via two corridors with Millen as the connection point of both legs. At Millen, the two corridors split and follow State Route 21 to Savannah and U.S. Highway 25 to Statesboro and I-16.
