Local group decorates war veterans' graves

The Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp (SCV) 2101 is decorating the graves of Confederate war veterans in Jenkins County during the month of April, which has been proclaimed "Confederate Heritage and History Month" in Georgia by Governor Sonny Perdue.

In addition, the flags of the Confederate States will fly at the Confederate Soldiers' Monument during the month. The public is invited to view the display and read about the history behind these banners on the interpretive signs at the site on the Jenkins County Court House lawn.

The Jenkins County Memorial Library will host another display by the Camp on the Confederate prison Camp Lawton, located at Magnolia Springs State Park. Over 10,000 Union troops were housed at this 42-acre stockade, deemed the "largest in the world," and an estimated 750 died there in the six weeks the prison was in use.

The Buckhead-Fort Lawton Brigade camp of the SCV invites all to learn more about the history of the War Between the States right here in our county during this month-long recognition of the fighting men of the Southland.
