Sandersville Technical College hosts region GCSA competition
The 2008 Region 6 Georgia Career Student Competition (formerly VOCA) was held at Sandersville Technical College on Friday, Feb. 22. Three hundred forty-four students from 16 area high schools participated in this event.

With 42 project categories - ranging from mechanical drafting to agricultural science and graphic design - the event showcased a diverse group of skill sets. First, second and third place winners moved on to the state level competition held April 3-5 in Jekyll Island.

The GCSA contests enable members to demonstrate profi- ciency and to acquire experience in chapter projects, leadership skills, and occupational preparation. This event allows students to showcase their achievements, stimulate their growth and improvement in integrating career/ technical skills, academic skills and experiences. It is also a great opportunity to encourage and elevate positive social skills and raise their expectations.

CSA members competing from Jenkins County High School were: Courtney Johnson, Career Exploration Manual - 1st place; Sha-Nique Prescott, Community/ Civic Awareness - 3rd place; Matesia Frison, Cosmetology: Nail Design - 1st place; Jardy Sapp, Mathematical Application - Honorable Mention; Patricia Milton, School Project - 1st place; Dorothy Davis, Applied Communication - 3rd place; Jalisa Banner, Childcare and Development - 2nd place; Shardavia Green, Communication Skills - 6th place; Shante Bynes, Computer Applications - 1st place; Bonnie Milton, Cosmetology: Hair Design - 2nd place; Shalagh Hunter, Marian Kelsey, and Tamara Tobie, Creative Problem Solving - 4th place; Keith Kelly, Entrepreneurship - Honorable Mention; Lashonda Kelsey, Interior Design - 3rd place; Glenn Kelly, Leadership Development - 2nd place; Abraham Jones, Most Improved Young Man - 1st place; Mikeshia Williams, Prepared Speech - 2nd place; and Hillary Hudson and Victoria Langston, Chapter of the Year - Superior Rating. Porshea Cooper won the election for Georgia CSA State Secretary for 2008- 2009. Voting delegates were Barbara Watson and Dexter Golphin.

Laney High School - Augusta; Butler High School - Augusta; Bradwell Institute - Hinesville; Washington County High School - Sandersville; and Statesboro High School - Statesboro.
