Ag Line: Soil Sampling on the Farm and Garden Even if you are not a farmer, you probably have heard on the news or have heard other people talk about high fertilizer prices. It seems as though everything is going up, including food, fuel, fertilizer, etc. Let's talk about fertilizer. A couple of years ago, a bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer was approximately $8/bag. Currently, this same bag is approximately $15/bag. That is almost a 50% increase! This shortage is the direct result of worldwide demand for fertilizer products skyrocketing, coupled with a reduced supply. In other words, when you get an increase in demand fueled with short supply, the result is extremely high prices. You probably are wondering where I am going with all of this. As farmers and homeowners plant this year's crop, it is imperative that they are soil sampling. The number one reason people do not soil sample is the cost. However, with an increase in fertilizer products, soil sampling should be a no brainer! Soil sampling will provide one with all of the nutritional needs of their soil. All potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, and the soil's pH will be determined and reported. The Jenkins County Extension Office is a one-stop source for information and having soil samples processed. We currently charge $7/sample if you have five or more, otherwise, samples are $8 a piece. We do have a soil probe which is used to pull the sample for public check-out. Soil samples should be taken no more than six inches below the soil line and when the soil is dry/moist, but not when wet. The county Extension Office also provides the collection bag. Frequently Asked Questions Q: When and how often should soils be tested? A: Soils can be tested anytime during the year. However, allow enough time for the analysis and for fertilizer and lime application. Lime reacts slowly and, if possible, it should be mixed with the soil two to three months before planting. Generally, fall is the most desirable time to sample because landscapes and gardens are usually dry and easily accessible. Once medium or high fertility levels are established, lawn and ornamental areas need to be sampled every two to three years. Vegetable gardens should be sampled every 1 to 2 years. Q: How soon will I get my results back (turn-around-time)? A: The analysis takes two to three working days from the time the lab receives the samples. In general, it takes 4 to 5 days from the time we receive the samples to the time you get your test reports back. Q: Who do I contact regarding my soil test results and recommendations if I don't understand the numbers? A: The Soil Test Report provides an interpretation of all soil tests done by the Soil Testing Lab and is accompanied by appropriate nutrient and lime recommendations. The county Extension Agent will be available for further interpretation.
