Better Hometown plans to clean up county Jenkins County's official cleanup day is Saturday, April 26. Millen Better Hometown members will be on the College Avenue side of the Jenkins County Courthouse to distribute trash bags, gloves and vests to volunteers between 8-8:30 a.m. Participants in cleanup day are asked to pick up trash until noon and bring bags of trash to the courthouse square immediately after finishing. Trash will be loaded on trailers to be taken to the landfill. The City of Millen will participate by having the trash picked up city-wide prior to April 26. County residents who find it difficult to dispose of items such as refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, scrap metal or abandoned vehicles can get assistance in removing these items by contacting scrap metal dealers. Anyone needing help in locating a dealer can call the Millen-Jenkins County Chamber of Commerce office at 982-5595. Tipping fees at the Jenkins County Landfill will be waived for personal disposal April 24-26. Tires will be accepted at the landfill, but there will be a charge. Anyone needing a schedule of charges for tires should call the county commissioners' office at 982-2536. Commercial disposal fees will not be waived. Friends of the Millen Cemetery will be working at the city cemetery and anyone who would like to volunteer to assist them should contact Steve Burke at 982-1679. Millen Better Hometown is still recruiting "Fifty to Fix." Groups who have committed to work are Buckhead-Fort Lawton Brigade #2102, SCV; Millen Make a Difference; Millen Garden Club; Azalea Garden Club; Jenkins County High School Student Council; Jenkins County High School Science Club; Millen Better Hometown; Americorps; 4-H Clubs; and Friends of the Millen Cemetery. During the month of April many groups are working to improve Georgia communities during this year's Cleanup and Keep Georgia Beautiful Month. The event, organized state wide by Keep Georgia Beautiful, is part of the nation's largest cleanup, beautification, and community improvement program, Keep America Beautiful. Everyone is invited to join in the local cleanup. Individuals who are not part of an organized group are welcome to join other groups or to work on their own. Please join and help get Jenkins County clean. It is important to Millen BHT to have a record of individuals or groups who work and the amount of trash collected. Please call the chamber office (982-5595) to report activities. |
