Confederate memorial held The sharp crack of musketry and the boom of a single mortar reverberated through downtown Millen on Sunday, April 27, as the local Sons of Confederate Veterans camp, along with representatives from two other area camps, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Order of Robert E. Lee honored the common soldier of the South on the front lawn of the Jenkins County Courthouse. Buckhead-Fort Lawton Brigade #2102 of Millen hosted its third annual observance, with help from the E. Porter Alexander camp in Augusta and the Dixie Guards camp from Metter. Representing the UDC and OREL respectively were Donna Drake and Donna Mull. Between the gentle rain showers, the Colors were presented by the 4-man Color Guard contingent of the JROTC from Jenkins County High School, led by Col. Kenneth Wade, instructor. The Georgia War Memorial flag (the venerable 1956 - 2001 state flag) was presented by Camp 2102 color sergeant Paul Herrington Jr., and the Confederate battle flag was presented by SCV cadet member Conley Drake. The Charge to the SCV was given by Lieutenant Commander Neil Dickey. Prayer was offered by Chaplain Ray Garvin. After brief opening remarks from commander Darryl Drake, the program was turned over to adjutant James Saxon, who read the honor roll of veterans buried in Jenkins County (75 plus names). The keynote speaker for the event was Georgia SCV Division commander Charlie Lott of Villa Rica, who brought a brief but concise message of "What If?" The late War cost the lives of over 600,000 citizens, both soldiers and civilians. Who is to know whether or not the cure for cancer died with a 19th century warrior at Manassas, or Gettysburg, or even in the skirmishing around Buckhead Church in December 1864? What other potential contributions to mankind were lost during those four terrible years of war? The highlight of the event was a Confederate flag retirement ceremony. Unserviceable cemetery and personal flags were burned in honor of the assembled members' ancestors. Light hord'oeuvres and lemonade was served at the reception following, contributed by Camp members' wives and Jean Chester. The 40 or so participants/ spectators enjoyed the repast and the company very much. Plans are now in the works for another event next year, culminating in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Millen monument's unveiling in June 2009. |
