Amy Kathleen Kovac, 17- year-old daughter of Victor B. Kovac, was recently named Star Student at Salem High School in Rockdale County. She named Joanna Anglin, her English teacher, as the Star Teacher.

To obtain the STAR nomination, students must have the highest score in one administration of the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) taken through the November test date of their senior year. The nominee must also be in the top 10 percent or one of the top 10 students in their graduating class. Kovac's score was 2320 out of a possible 2400.

She has been accepted into the Honor's Program at the University of Georgia, where she will be enrolled in the fall of this year. She has declined to declare a major.

"My interests have always been all over the place; I like math, linguistics, psychology," she said. "I really want to end up doing something good for the world."

Kovac is the great-granddaughter of Annette Strickland Smith of Millen and the late James M. Smith Sr. She is the granddaughter of retired Jenkins County educator Linda S. Boland.
