Jenkins County High School students participated in the "Celebration of Education" essay contest sponsored recently by East Georgia College and Swainsboro Technical College. The theme for the 2008 contest was "So, Why Am I Studying This? Which school subjects will best prepare me for my future, and why?"

The competition was steep, as schools in five counties participated. Overall, Jenkins County students turned in more essays for the competition than all the other counties totaled together. Judging was based on style, grammar, development and originality. JCHS swept the awards!

Joanna Burke, daughter of Joseph and Deanna Burke, won first place for the high school division. Becca Rich, daughter of Don and Cindy Rich, placed third. Christian Chance, daughter of Chris and Julie Chance, received honorable mention.

Burke was awarded a $200 savings bond and Rich received a $50 savings bond. Two young ladies who provided the entertainment for the evening were Patricia Milton and Chiquita Kelly.
