JCHS announces val, sal

The Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Jenkins County High School (JCHS) Class of 2008 were announced last week. Brookes Brinson, daughter of Matt and Jancey Brinson, is Valedictorian, and Dorothy (Dee Dee) Davis, daughter of Jimmy Davis and Regina Davis, is Salutatorian.
Brookes' academic achievements include: Hugh O'Brian Scholar; 6-year recipient of Rotary scholastic award; National Society of High School Schol- ars; C-Cats scholar who attended C-Cats at Clemson University; University of Georgia "Lunch for Champions"; Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in humanities and social sciences; Georgia Electric Membership Corporation Washington Youth Tour participant; Georgia Merit Scholar-University of Georgia; highest average awards in math, science and social studies for grades 9-11; Senior Superlative; Homecoming Court grades 9, 11 and 12; and Homecoming Queen.
She has been involved in the Beta Club; Interact Club, severing as chaplain in the 10th grade and participating in the Eagle Rock Café Dinner Theatre; Student Council; ACE volunteer reader grades 9-10; Yearbook staff four years, editor; Club Hero; Leadership Council, youth group at West Millen Baptist Church and member of West Millen Baptist Church.
Brookes has participated in the following sports: softball team, three years; track team, two years, Best in Distance award in 9th grade, Region champs 9th and 10th grades; cross county team, one year; varsity cheerleading team, one year; competition cheerleading team, one year, Heart of a Champion award, regions champs, 6th in state; and varsity tennis team, two years.
She plans to attend the University of Georgia, majoring in Pre-medicine to become a pediatric oncologist.
Dee Dee's academic accolades include: Jenkins County Middle School salutatorian; National Achievement Scholar recognition; Georgia Certificate of Merit recipient; Rochester University Bausch and Lomb Science Award; Basketball Scholar Award; highest GPA among ZPB Archonettes Award; JROTC Sergeant 1st Class; Millen Rotary club speech contest winner and region second runner-up; highest Spanish average, grades 10 and 11; highest literature average, grades 9 and 10; highest biology average, 10th grade; VOCA competition, 2nd place region, 1st place state in mathematical applications 2007; VOCA competition, second place region, 5th place state in communication skills, 2006; GCSA competition, 3rd place region, 1st place state in applied communications 2008;; GCSA reporter; a helper at the JCHS blood drive, 2007-2008; and STAR student.
Her extracurricular activities include: softball, three years; basketball, four years; GCSA, formerly VOCA, three years; Zeta Phi Beta Archonette, four years; member of Williams Grove Missionary Baptist Church and frequent visitor to West Millen Baptist Church; Educational Talent Search Member; Beta Club; and Girl Scouts of America.
Dee Dee plans to attend Valdosta State University in the fall, majoring in accounting.
