Jenkins County High School BLAST, Grad.NET and Youth Apprentice students participated in a "career exploration" field trip on Thursday, April 3, to Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro.
Mike McCracken gave the students an all-inclusive tour, which began at the Welcome Center, where exhibits and models of the facility are on display. Later, McCracken demonstrated how the two power plants generate and distribute electricity.
Students had a close-up view of the cooling towers, which are a famous trademark for Plant Vogtle. The cooling towers stand over 500 feet tall!
Plant Vogtle currently has two power plants and future plans are in place for two more power plants.
Students learned about job opportunities that Plant Vogtle offers, and the required education and experience needed for these positions. Students also learned that nuclear power is a safe, reliable and cost-effective power source that has a lowimpact on the environment.
