DOT to replace three local bridges

Three bridges located in the county are scheduled for replacement by the Department of Transportation (DOT). The Jenkins County Commissioners announced during the group's Tuesday, June 3, meeting that work would soon begin to replace Scull Creek bridge and two bridges over the Ogeechee River at Herndon. A public hearing is to be scheduled by the DOT soon to inform the public of road closures and allow public input concerning the matter.

The commissioners tabled appointment of a Historical Preservation Board member until such time as the matter could be publicized. Anyone interested in serving on this board should express their desire by letter to the office of the Jenkins County Commissioners.

Grady Lane, field director, reported that construction of a diversion pond at the county landfill was underway. The pond will be used to divert rainwater from a contaminated pond that will be allowed to dry out so removal of the contaminated material can be accomplished less expensively.

Other actions taken by the commissioners included the following:

• Awarded pest control bid to low-bidder I Spy Pest Control;

• Tabled decision on inmate work crew until additional information could be obtained;

• Awarded lawn care bid to low-bidder RC Lawn Care;

• Tabled compilation of a list of names to be considered for appointment to Jenkins County Hospital Authority board until the group's next meeting;

• Approved chairman James Henry as representative on the Public Defender Standards Council;

• Approved changes to new retirement plan document by adoption of a resolution; and

• Approved Millen Better Hometown request for donation to annual patriotic fireworks show.
