In one of the closest races in the county's history, only 18 votes separated the top two candidates for Jenkins County Sheriff.
Unofficial results in Tuesday's Democratic/Republican Primary Election reveal that the top vote-getter was challenger Robert Oglesby with 822 votes. Incumbent Tim Fields followed closely with 804, and challenger Tony A. Taylor received 469 votes.
Since neither Oglesby nor Fields received a majority of the 2,202 votes cast, a runoff election will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5.
The only other locally contested race was for the District #4 seat on the Jenkins County Board of Commissioners with the successful candidate being incumbent Floyd Chance Jr. who polled 283 votes. Other candidates for the position were Rudine Becton who polled 102 votes and Ed Meadows who received 136 votes.
