Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

A former U.S. senator from Texas made a public statement not long ago that America's economic problems are imaginary and that Americans have become a nation of whiners. That statement reminded me of a statement made by a French queen who, when told that the people had no bread to eat, said, "Then let them eat cake!" She was beheaded during the French Revolution that followed. Statements like these show just how much the elite in our society are disconnected from reality.

Recently a friend told me that she agreed with the senator's statement because we live in the richest nation on earth and that we have no reason to complain but too many people do complain (whine.) That sounds reasonable, doesn't it? That certainly sounds reasonable to the elite who sit at the supper table and eat first, leaving the scraps for the rest of us. So, since our table has more food on it than the neighbors' table, should we not complain that all we get are the scraps? After all, aren't the scraps at our table better than the scraps at the neighbors' table?

If we did not live in the United States of America, then the elitist whine would be valid. But we do live in the U.S.A., a nation founded on the notion of equality, a nation formed with the noble intent that there would be no ruling class, that we the people would tell the governing body what to do. Unfortunately we see today a governing body that has trampled the American dream. The conservative movement has been hijacked by the elite who seek to rule our everyday lives and enrich themselves at our expense. The ideal that Ronald Reagan espoused, "Government was created to protect us from each other - not from ourselves," is completely lost in the modern (so-called) conservative movement who whine about whining. Our government is completely out of our control and out of touch with reality.

"We the people" are not children who need to be told what to do and how to do it, (supposedly for our own good,) by our governing body. Now what sounds like a whine to the elite and their cheerleaders may just be the cry of the eagle swooping down from on high to lay waste to a den of thieves.

Dear Editor:

I read your article in The Millen News and I was very impressed with the VFW's involvement in erecting a monument for our service people who have served, died and who now are serving our country.

I would like to make a donation to the project on behalf of my late husband Cleveland McMillan who served our country from Jenkins County. Cleveland is now deceased and buried at the Millen Cemetery, but Millen has always been our home and will remain our home in our hearts.

Thanks to the VFW for their efforts.
Sincerely,
Eula McMillan
