Morrison Grove Celebrates 136 Years
Morrison Grove Baptist Church will celebrate "136 Years of Faithfulness to God" Sunday, Aug. 3. The celebration will begin with Sunday School at 10:30 a.m. The morning worship service will follow at 11:30 a.m. As a part of the celebration, the program committee has planned a service that will include a memorial tribute message from the Rev. P.M. Broomfield, who will be accompanied by the congregation of Zion Baptist Church. The Food Committee will have a meal prepared for those in attendance. The Rev. A.A. Bush Jr. and the congregation of Morrison Grove Baptist Church invite the public to attend. In 1872, the Revs. M. Wallace, N. Walker, Thomas Morton and Bob Kelsey and Deacon Daniel Johnson organized the church on the Marsh Perkins place, under a brush arbor with sand for a floor and poles for seats. The Rev. H.C. Lane was called as pastor. The first member was Henry Morrison, for whom the church was named. Sister Hattie Pughsley became the first mother of the church. When it became necessary to move the church out of the fields, deacons Henry Morrison, Daniel Johnson and Moses Simmons went to James Daniels to buy a piece of land near the road. Daniels gave them two acres on which the church is located today. Deacon Simmons used a broad ax to cut out all the timber for the building of the historic church.
