Run-off to be held Aug. 5 Two races will be decided in the Democratic primary runoff election to be held Tuesday, Aug. 5. Locally, incumbent Tim Fields is facing opposition from challenger Robert Oglesby for the position of Jenkins County Sheriff. Fields polled 804 votes in the July 15 primary election, and Oglesby polled 822. A third candidate, Tony Taylor, received 469 votes. Since neither Fields nor Oglesby received a majority of the votes cast, a run-off became necessary. There are no Republican candidates for sheriff. On the state level, Vernon Jones and Jim Martin are vying for the Democratic nomination for United States Senator. The successful candidate in this race will face Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss in the November general election. Jenkins County Election Superintendent Wanda Burke noted that there will not be a Republican primary run-off. Therefore, voters who voted a Republic ballot in the primary election are not eligible to vote in the run-off. Voters who were registered to vote as of June 16, and who voted in the Democratic primary, or voters who did not vote in the primary election, may cast their ballots in this primary runoff election. Advance voting in the election will take place at Jenkins County Courthouse through Friday, Aug. 1. During this time period, voters may vote an absentee ballot without having to state a reason for during so. A photo I.D. will be required. Forms of identification that will be accepted during advance voting and for voting at the polls on Election Day are Georgia driver's license, valid I.D. card by any state or U.S. with photo, valid U.S. passport, valid government employer photo I.D., valid U.S. military I.D. card with photo or valid tribal I.D. card with photo. |
