The Chatter Box

The annual Fair-on-the-Square proved to be very successful at drawing a large crowd to the Jenkins County Courthouse square and our community on Saturday. The parade was great; there was plenty of food; the arts and crafts booths provided unique items for purchase; and the entertainment was enjoyable.

Hats off to Millen Better Hometown, sponsors, and everyone who had a hand in making it another great event.

This week's poll question on our website was, "How would you rate your level of concern over the nation's current economic crisis?"

Responses, as of Monday, were: Greatly concerned - 25; Moderately concerned - 4; Little concern - 1; Don't care - 1.

Comments were: "While I believe this is a very serious matter, I also believe things will work out. It will probably be a couple of years before the economy is on a more sound footing again."

"I am very concerned. Perdue ordered state agencies to cut spending 6 percent, and now they are saying it may not be enough. State agencies have already turned in budget plans that could bring hundreds of lay-offs over the next 2½ years, and numerous of positions the agencies want to fill will be eliminated. It seems as each day passes, another person or family is affected. This has hit close to home, and if I had to rate my level of concern, it would be a 10!"
