Michelle Brannen is not only a breast cancer survivor. She is also "Miss July" in the Portraits of Life calendar, sponsored by University Hospital Breast Health Center.

Brannen was one of two local women, Lula Burton being the other, invited to participate in the annual Portraits of Life photography exhibit featuring breast cancer survivors. A group photograph of participants was revealed at a fashion show and dinner sponsored by Comcast, Macy's and University Hospital's Breast Health Center on Oct. 2.

Brannen is a kindergarten paraprofessional at Jenkins County Elementary School (JCES). She and husband Jimmy, a 4th grade teacher at JCES, have two children Mark, 12, and Alyssa, 10. A diagnosis of breast cancer and then surgery on her birthday in 2007 was not something she expected.

"I tell everyone I have three birthdays - the day I was born; the day I accepted Christ; and the day I had my surgery," she said.

Despite having endured chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, Brannen has an optimistic outlook on life and is very appreciative of the support she has received.

"Everyone at JCES has been very supportive as well as my church family at Oak Hill Baptist Church and others in the community. I am so thankful," she said.

As part of its observance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Portraits of Life calendars are being offered for sale at $5 each.

"Every penny goes to the University Hospital Breast Health Center," explained Brannen.

Calendars may be purchased from Brannen at the JCES. To arrange to purchase a calendar, call Brannen at 982-8036. Calendars may also be purchased from Lula Burton at the Huddle House restaurant.
