Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
Thank you so much to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2776 for all they did to make it the best Memorial Day we've ever had!
It loosened my tear glands, which doesn't often happen. Needless to say, I'm a grateful American for all the people in service of country have done for me.
Carlton was great! I'm sure it meant much for him to be back home. Words cannot adequately express my appreciation for all the VFW Post did.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Gunn Young

Dear Editor:
A letter of gratitude to the members of the Jenkins County Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post 2776, Commander Byron Scogins, Randall Brown, Joe Sasser, Dana Edenfield, Pam Dwight, Jim Lindsay, Elbert Burke, Leroy Clayton, William Gunn, Don Leonard, Larry Thompson, Jesse Guthrie, Casey Johnson, William Matthews, Darryl Drake and Ray Garvin.
The Jenkins County War Memorial dedication held on Memorial Day on the steps of the Jenkins County Courthouse was one of the most well-planned and impressive events held in Millen in a long time. I'm very sure the dedication ceremony honoring our veterans took many months of fundraising, planning and hard work by our local VFW 2776 members. Those who attended the ceremony heard words from Dr. Maurice Crowder, Mayor Rocker, Lt. Gen. David Poythress, Ga. Senator J.B. Powell, Ga. Rep. Jon Burns, Nancy Bobbit-senior field representative for U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, U.S. Congressman John Barrow and Jenkins County native, Gen. Carlton Fulford, USMS (Ret), Ed Arita, as well as song tributes from Leroy Clayton and Jill Leonard.
It was a great day, and we express our since appreciation to the members of our VFW Post 2776 and the Millen Woman's Club for all of their hard work, time and effort in planning and executing such a memorable event in honor of those who gave their lives in service to our country.
Sincerely,
Perry and Vicki Mitchell

Dear Editor:
I am happy and proud of our 2009 baseball team. They did a great job. I know all our members of the 1958 team were pulling for them to win it all.
In 1958, I was a junior and played third base on our high school team. This is the only time that Jenkins County High School (JCHS) ever played for the state championship. Our team traveled to Thomaston as all the playoff games were played there. We lost to Model, a school from the Atlanta area. Although we lost, this was the best team JCHS ever had. There were a few teams that had some success but didn't have the talent or depth of this 1958 team.
The members were Jack Hinson, 1f; Homer Meyers, cf; Wendell McMillian, rf; Don Parker, c; Edward Lewis, 1b; Taylor Ward, ss; Frank Stephens,p-1b; Connie Lewis, p-1b; and myself, played third base. Jesse was the sub on this team. I can't recall the others. Hubert Lanier was the equipment manager.
Frank, Connie and I played on the 1959 Ogeechee League champions. Connie went on to Georgia Southern University and was the NAIA freshman basketball Player of the Year for 1959-1960.
These guys would be a terror in these times with short fields and metal bats. Jack and Don would have lost all the balls. Connie, Frank, Wendell, Taylor and I would have gotten our share. Homer Meyers was the best hitter I ever saw in high school and could run like the wind. Connie had a major league over-hand curve (drop) that no one could hit. Frank was our pro prospect at the time. Jesse, a freshman, would have been a star on any other team.
I will always believe this had something to do with the success Millen had for 10 years in the Ogeechee League. They ruled baseball in this area, even played for a national title in Louisville, Ky.
Sincerely, Butch Joiner
